Goodfellas

Probably my favourite of Scorsese's films so far, in the territory that made him famous - Italian-American organised crime, with a solid performance from Robert De Niro, and a superbly chilling one from Joe Pesci (hard to believe someone who was in Home Alone can be so terrifying). Some good supporting characters, too, and for once a compelling female role in a ganster drama. Some great music, fun directorial decisions (freezes, long steadycam shots) and a gripping story. It's strange, how compelling and glamorous such a horrible life can be, and worth remembering as we sigh for some of that cowboy-like freedom of crime, brutality and privilege, that most of the people involved with the mob know no other life.
