1408

1408 was a slightly boring film about a spooky room, based on a Stephen King story. The trouble with a setting in which absolutely anything can happen is that it soon stops being interesting. Too much focus on a cheesy backstory about a broken family, when what the film did best was creepy stuff – it would’ve been better for the ghosts of the room to be explored 7th Guest-style than for Enslin’s story to be. Subverting a clichéd twist still meant that horrible obvious set-up had to be in place. Random ghosties and an anything-goes storyline just made the whole thing quite boring. And John Cusack’s bizarre eye make-up was very distracting.

I want to play The 7th Guest again now…that game was genuinely scary. Way more so than Resident Evil…
