Kick-Ass

Well, I enjoyed it, but not without reservations. For the first half hour, I wasn’t keen at all, and then I really enjoyed the second and third acts. And here’s why: Kick Ass, when it gets down to it, is a typical modern superhero story with a quirky band of characters set against an organized crime ring, with lots of guns, violence and wire work. What it isn’t is a clever, innovative postmodern take on superhero tropes, ironically subverting clichés and making wry jokes about its subject. But at the outset, that’s what it tries to be. A geeky everyman decides he genuinely wants to try being a superhero and despite Internet notoriety, can do very little. But everything changes when a genuine trained hitman and his protégé-daughter join in.

At heart, it’s a red-blooded cartoon story with silly exaggerated ideas and lots of things blowing up. When it fully embraced that, I loved it. Just don’t try to pretend you’re wittier and cleverer than you really are. You end up looking like Runaways.
Still, I’ll have to check out the comic now.
